Toyota Australia and BHP say they are advancing lower-emissions technology in one of Australia’s most demanding environments. Two HiLux BEVs are now operating at BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s Goonyella Riverside coal mine in Queensland, bringing battery-electric light vehicle technology into a live mining environment.
This deployment builds on the HiLux BEV trial conducted by BHP in 2024 and is part of Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation, maintaining it says “the quality, durability, reliability and capability that HiLux is known for with zero-CO2 tailpipe emissions.”
BHP stated: “While the vehicles are an exciting milestone, the bigger story is what it takes to run them in a working mine: the infrastructure, operational capability and workforce readiness needed to operate safely and effectively at scale. The deployment builds on the industry-first Battery Electric HiLux trial announced in 2024 and is part of a broader program of electrification initiatives across our operations.” The vehicles are using Ocular Orion DC CCS2 chargers.
Adam Lancey – Asset President – BHP Mitsubishi Alliance stated: “Today we’re at Goonyella Riverside Mine in the Bowen Basin where we’re introducing two new battery electric Hilux vehicles and the dedicated charging infrastructure to support them. Goonyella is one of BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s largest mines and it’s well placed to help us understand how our new technology can be introduced safely and effectively in a complex operation.”
He added: “Electrification remains our preferred long-term pathway to reduce operational emissions from diesel and we need to build capability for the future. This is an important step in understanding what it takes to electrify mining operations at scale. Projects like this are helping lay the foundations for the next phase of our decarbonisation journey.”
