Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Orefields Mining regarding underground mine development work at the Viscaria mine in Kiruna, Sweden.
The LoI marks a further step in the long-standing collaboration between the two companies and forms part of the preparations for the planned start of production in 2028.
Orefields has been involved in the development of the Viscaria mine for several years, carrying out work including the rehabilitation of existing mine infrastructure, pilot drilling and the construction of ventilation shafts. This includes a new exhaust ventilation shaft with a diameter of five metres.
As the Viscaria project progresses, preparations for future mining operations continue. The LoI with Orefields Mining forms part of these efforts, with the two companies now discussing the terms of an expanded collaboration on underground mine development work.
“We have worked with Orefields for several years, and they have a thorough understanding of our mine and the conditions on site,” Charlotte Odenberger, COO of Viscaria, says. “They have already contributed valuable expertise to the ongoing work, and we welcome the opportunity to develop our collaboration further as we prepare the mine for production.”
For Orefields Mining, the LoI represents an opportunity to continue contributing to the reopening of the Viscaria mine and to build on the relationship established over recent years.

The parties will now continue discussions with the aim of reaching a final agreement on the underground mine development work in the near future.
