BHP’s Basto focusing on three key pillars for next wave of performance gains

Edgar Basto, Chief Enterprise Performance Officer at BHP, sees the next wave of performance improvements leveraging the mining company’s deep expertise, new technology and a continuous safety focus to deliver on an enterprise level, he said at IMARC 2026, in Sydney, today.

Basto, who is now in charge of rolling out enterprise-level performance gains across the company after previously serving as COO, sees the potential to “unlock massive value” across BHP by keeping these three aspects front and centre of its focus.

The BHP Operating System model, a continuous improvement methodology and working framework designed to integrate operational excellence into daily routines across BHP, will point towards the problems to solve; technology will provide options to solve these; and people will ensure that the potential gains are realised over the long term, he added.

“It all starts with people,” Basto said, explaining that the company needs to encourage a culture of experimenting with new technology to empower personnel to strive for these gains. But, he warned that safety was a prerequisite of any projects the company pursued.

“There is a healthy tension in terms of trying and experimenting with technology,” he said, adding that the benefits will likely outweigh the failures and that there needs to be a collaboration across BHP teams to ensure these learnings are rolled out across the group.
