Sunrise Approves €288 Million Syerston Scandium Project in Australia

Sunrise Energy Metals has approved the final investment decision for its €288 million Syerston scandium mine and refinery in Australia, with early construction activities under way and commercial production targeted for the second half of 2028.

The project is designed to produce approximately 60 tonnes of high-purity scandium oxide annually, potentially establishing a significant non-Chinese supply source for the aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing industries.

Scandium Production and Industrial Applications

Scandium is used in lightweight, high-strength aluminium-scandium alloys for aerospace, defence and advanced transport applications. Other uses include solid-oxide fuel cells and specialised industrial technologies.

Unlike bulk commodities such as lithium and copper, scandium is produced in relatively small quantities and is frequently recovered as a by-product of other mining operations.

US Financing Remains Conditional

Sunrise has a conditional long-term debt commitment of up to approximately €358 million from the US Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital.

Although this potential facility exceeds the estimated project cost, the financing remains subject to conditions and has not been confirmed as drawn. The final investment decision therefore does not mean that all committed funding is already available.

The approved €288 million investment excludes a potential downstream metallisation plant that could convert scandium oxide into products more suitable for industrial alloy manufacturers.

European Supply Opportunities and Offtake

Syerston could provide European aerospace and defence manufacturers with an alternative scandium supply source. However, no binding European offtake agreement was announced alongside the investment decision.

Sunrise will need to secure customers capable of absorbing the planned 60 tonnes of annual production under commercially sustainable conditions. Long-term supply agreements will therefore remain important as the project advances towards production.
