Northstone Resources Puts Serbia at Centre of Gold and Copper Strategy as Tlamino Advances

Australian-listed Northstone Resources is positioning Serbia as the main focus of its gold and copper exploration strategy, with work progressing on the Tlamino gold-silver project in the south of the country and the Timok East copper-gold project near Bor.

The company, formerly known as MinRex Resources, began trading under the Northstone Resources name and the ASX ticker NRL following its merger earlier in the year with Canada’s Electrum Discovery. The combination brought the two Serbian projects into the group’s portfolio. Northstone has identified Serbia as its principal exploration and development focus, with Tlamino representing its more advanced precious-metals asset and Timok East offering an opportunity to investigate copper-gold mineralisation in an established mining district.

Tlamino Gold-Silver Project Advances Towards Further Development

The Tlamino project covers more than 400 square kilometres through two granted exploration permits and three permit applications along the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic belt.

Its Barje deposit contains an inferred mineral resource of approximately 7.1 million tonnes grading 2.9 grams per tonne gold-equivalent, representing around 670,000 ounces of gold-equivalent. The resource includes approximately 570,000 ounces of gold and 8.8 million ounces of silver. Northstone’s planned work focuses on improving confidence in the existing resource through infill drilling, testing potential extensions through step-out drilling and investigating additional targets along the Barje-Liska structural corridor.

These activities are intended to establish a clearer understanding of the deposit’s size, geological continuity and potential for further resource growth. Barje has already undergone preliminary economic assessment. A 2021 preliminary economic assessment (PEA) examined the deposit as a potential conventional open-pit gold-silver operation. Northstone plans to update the project’s technical and economic studies using new geological information and revised commodity-price assumptions. The updated work will help assess the project’s development prospects, although further technical studies and regulatory processes remain necessary.

Resource Definition and Permitting Remain Key Steps

Tlamino has progressed beyond the earliest stage of exploration because Barje has a defined inferred resource and an existing preliminary economic assessment. These milestones do not establish that the project is ready for construction.

The next stages include resource drilling, updated economic analysis, environmental work and Serbian permitting. Further studies will be needed to establish the project’s technical and financial requirements and determine whether it can advance towards feasibility and financing. The distinction between an inferred resource and a more advanced resource classification is important. Infill drilling and geological assessment can help improve confidence in the mineral inventory, but the results must support any subsequent resource upgrade. The outcome of this work will influence how Northstone evaluates the scale and development potential of the Tlamino deposit.

Timok East Targets Copper-Gold Mineralisation Near Bor

Northstone’s second Serbian project, Timok East, provides exposure to copper-gold exploration near the country’s established Bor mining area. The licences are located approximately 2 kilometres from the Veliki Krivelj copper mine and 5 kilometres from the Bor mining complex.

Geophysical surveys have identified two conductive zones at estimated depths of approximately 250 to 550 metres below surface. Northstone interprets these features as possible intrusive or hydrothermal systems associated with concealed porphyry copper-gold mineralisation. The interpretation remains a geological hypothesis rather than a confirmed discovery. The company plans additional modelling and target ranking before proceeding with initial diamond drilling.

Timok East was previously selected for BHP’s Xplor programme, providing a further element of technical history for the project. Nevertheless, the presence, grade and extent of any economically significant copper-gold deposit remain unproven. Drilling will be required to test the geophysical targets and determine whether the interpreted mineralisation exists at depth.

Two Serbian Projects at Different Exploration Stages

Northstone’s portfolio combines a precious-metals project with an established inferred resource and preliminary economic work with a copper-gold exploration project that is still awaiting initial diamond drilling. Tlamino’s immediate priorities are resource definition, further exploration and updated technical and economic studies. At Timok East, the main objective is to refine exploration targets and test them through drilling.

The two projects therefore require different work programmes and carry different geological and development uncertainties. Northstone’s strategy centres on advancing both assets within Serbia, using further exploration and technical assessment to establish their potential. The company’s future progress will depend on the results of drilling, resource work, economic studies and the necessary permitting processes.

Serbia Becomes Northstone’s Main Exploration Focus

Serbia’s mining sector includes major copper operations around Bor and Čukaru Peki, operated by Zijin. Northstone’s activities represent a different part of the sector, focused on exploration, resource definition and the assessment of potential future mine developments.

The company’s two projects cover different metals and stages of advancement: Tlamino contains a reported gold-silver resource, while Timok East is targeting potential copper-gold mineralisation near an established mining district. The change to the Northstone name follows the merger that brought the Serbian assets together within the Australian-listed company. Its future performance will depend less on the rebranding itself than on the technical results and development progress achieved at the projects.

The next major milestones are further resource work and updated economic studies at Tlamino, alongside target refinement and planned initial drilling at Timok East. These steps will help determine whether Northstone can advance its Serbian gold and copper assets towards more developed projects.
