Serbia’s Jama Bor expansion could lift annual output toward 18 million tonnes

Planning documents for Zijin’s Bor expansion in Serbia point to a proposed expansion of the Jama Bor underground operation that could raise annual ore output toward 18 million tonnes. The development concept covers roughly 571.5 million tonnes of ore over an indicative horizon of about 41 years. The figures describe a proposed development, not a completed expansion.

Achieving that scale would require deeper mine infrastructure, enlarged flotation capacity, new or modified transport links and significant surface works. The surface works would include changes affecting the Brezonik settlement, making land acquisition and relocation potential critical-path issues even where geology and financing are secure.

The proposed mining system would depend on reliable power, industrial water, tailings capacity, rail and road logistics, skilled labour and a credible environmental-management regime. The expansion is framed as an integrated regional-infrastructure project linking mine planning with smelting and processing, grid capacity, municipal development and environmental performance. Infrastructure availability and the management of these dependencies would help determine whether the development creates a durable industrial cluster or adds pressure to an already heavily industrialised mining basin.

The treatment of Brezonik, compensation structures, local air and water monitoring, and transparent disclosure are expected to be central to the project’s bankability and political resilience. The scale also means that execution failures could have national rather than local consequences.

Investment in electricity grids, electric transport, renewable generation, data centres and defence supply chains is supporting copper demand. A larger Bor complex could strengthen Serbia’s domestic copper extraction and processing and place the country more firmly in European Union discussions on secure raw-material supply, although Serbia is not an EU member state. If successfully executed, the expansion could make eastern Serbia one of Europe’s most consequential copper districts.
